The Washington softball team was handed a pair of losses by Mt. Pleasant Thursday, June 8, as the Panthers worked on the field to get the wins.
Washington lost the first game in 10 innings 2-4 and lost the second game 8-13.
In the first game Mt. Pleasant got on the board with two runs in the second inning before Washington would score their first run in the fifth inning, coming from Alexa Mitchell.
The bats were silent until the seventh inning when Brooke Stout drove in an RBI to tie the game.
The first two extra innings would have no one cross the plate. In the top of the 10th, Mt. Pleasant?s Trinity Krabill scored a two-run homer to take the lead and got the win. Molly Sparks took the loss for the Demons giving up the four runs.
In the second game, Mt. Pleasant came out strong in the first two innings, putting up eight runs total before Washington would score on a two-RBI double by Alexa Mitchell.
Mt. Pleasant added two more runs in the fourth to add to their lead and put two more across the plate in the fifth while Washington?s Haylee Wilson had a three-RBI home run to keep the game alive after putting the score at 12-5.
The Demons put up two runs in the sixth, making the score 12-7, but Mt. Pleasant would add one more to their lead in the seventh inning while Washington also added one more to put the final score at 13-8 in the opponent?s favor.
Coach Ben Obermann said of evening, ?Mt. Pleasant, in my mind, is one of the best teams in the state. We went toe-to-toe with them. Emotionally, it was a tough first game. Softball is one of the most difficult sports to play as we play doubleheaders.
?In other sports, you get up for one game and that?s it. It?s tough to bounce back when you go 10 innings.
?It was an outstanding softball game. Obviously, we missed some opportunities to end it early, but that was encouraging.
?In the second game, we get down 8-0, then down 12-2, down to our last strike when Halyee Wilson hits a home run for us to keep us in it. I admire our fight and our competiveness.
?Our girls battle and they give themselves a chance to win. It would have been easy for us to quit in that last inning and say ?we?re going home early losing 12-2? but no, we fought and battled. In the sixth inning we were close to breaking through and had a call go against us after having some continuous hitting going.
?The fight is there and we?re doing a lot of good things. We played excellent defense tonight.?
The girls take part in a tournament at Fairfield this weekend. What will be the team?s focus?
?Having confidence at the plate,? Obermann says. ?With runners in scoring position, we don?t want to tense up. We have to get those runs in.
?We have to continue to make positive strides and continue to play solid defense. Morgan Brinning made a lot of great plays at shortstop tonight.
?When you?re making great plays, that kind of lifts the team up. If we can continue that defensive effort, and continue how we finish off the game defensively, that?s going to be a good combo for us moving forward.?
