Softball: Trojans tumble; Anderson shoots down all but 3 for WMU

FAIRFIELD — The 12th-ranked softball team in Class 3A defeated the fifth-ranked team in 4A Tuesday when Albia won 7-2 over Fairfield.
Albia, which has a 9-4 record and is the reigning 3A champion, got two runs off Coty Engle in the first inning, another in the fifth, then two apiece in the sixth and seventh. Engle struck out 11 in pitching all seven innings, allowed five hits and five earned runs. She issued 10 basses on balls.
Fairfield, which has a 10-8 record, had five hits, two from Jenna Norris. Norris had a single and hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Trojans only scores.
Anderson’s 15 Ks carry No. 15 Wolves
MEDIAPOLIS — Madie Anderson gave up a hit and no walks while striking out 15 Bullettes in a six-innings 10-0 win by 15th-ranked (Class 1A) Winfield-Mount Union in a Super Conference North Division game.
Anna Anderson cracked a home run, Kayreana Sharar laced a triple, Keely Malone had two doubles and Jobey Malone went 3-for-4 in the Wolves -offensive explosion.
WMU is 10-3 overall with a North record.
Columbus drops 2
LETTS — Two North Division games between Columbus (6-11, 3-5) and Class 2A’s No. 3 Louisa-Muscatine (10-6, 7-1) had the same score, 15-5, but one was five innings and one six.
Michelle Diaz had a double and three RBI in the five-inning loss. Columbus teammate Jobie Lekwa had a single and a double in the six-inning defeat.
Batcheller boosts Highland
LONE TREE — The Huskies (14-2, 8-1) recorded a 13-1 North win as they felled Lone Tree (7-10, 3-8) behind Grace Batcheller’s performance. Batcheller allowed four hits and struck out three without a walk, then batted in four runs with a single and a home run. Abbi Stransky smote a homer as well and Jenna Sands also had four RBI on two doubles. Sarah Burton connected on a triple.
Twice for Cardinal
NEW LONDON — The Comets (8-8, 6-2) streaked to two South wins, 13-1 and 10-0, by allowing just three hits in each win over the Tigers (4-14, 0-5).
Natalie Burden, Kaitlyn Lee and Ashlyn McSorley each had a hit in the 13-1 loss. McSorley, Elly Manning and Marah Hartrick had the three hits in the 10-0 New London loss.
