BURLINGTON — Three Union area teams were in marquee matchups as part of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s annual shootout on Saturday, but none of them brought home a win in one of the biggest nights of the season for the conference.
The Highland girls and Hillcrest Academy Boys were both defeated in SEISC championship games, with the Huskies falling to No. 9 (3A) Mediapolis, 70-41, and the Ravens dropping their matchup against No. 3 (1A) Notre Dame, 86-58.
The Winfield-Mt. Union boys nearly scored one for the North Division, but fell just short in the No. 2 boys’ shootout game against Mediapolis, falling 53-48.
The Highland girls were just the latest in a line of teams that couldn’t contain the now 21-0 Bullettes. The Huskies trailed 35-19 at halftime, and Mediapolis put the game away in the third quarter with an 18-3 run.
Kamryn Fink flirted with a triple double in the loss, going for 16 points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Hailey Brun scored 15 points. Emersyn Schultz and Kinzie Ruess had four points each, and Kayce Schnoebelen finished with two.
Highland’s game was held at Highland in the afternoon, while Hillcrest Academy and Winfield-Mt. Union both played at Notre Dame High School in the nightcap of the challenge.
That night’s SEISC championship was close through one half. Hillcrest Academy trailed just 37-31 at the break, and looked to be on their way to challenging for the gold. Notre Dame, however, went nuclearn in the second half, outscoring the Ravens 24-8 in the third and 25-19 in the fourth.
“We just didn’t play good defense in the third quarter,” said Hillcrest Academy head coach Stephen Bender. “I think part of that was, we were in foul trouble. We’ve got to learn to play better defense when we’re in foul trouble.”
Lincoln Miller led Hillcrest with 15 points in the loss. Rowan Miller had 13 points and six assists. Gibson Scott scored 12 points. Kale Bailey had eight. Isaac Birky and Kayden Estell each scored five.
Winfield-Mt. Union took a long time to get going in its battle against Mediapolis in the second-place game. The Wolves were down 23-14 at halftime and 46-25 after three quarters, but eventually found their groove.
“We talked about just chipping away at it,” said Wolves’ head coach Klay Edwards. “We tried to get it back under 10, which we did, and then they started feeling a little bit of pressure.”
Not only did the Wolves storm all the way back to cut the game down to four points, but also had a shot at a 3-pointer to cut it back to one in the final seconds. The Wolves couldn’t find the net, however, and ultimately couldn’t finish off the comeback.
“Part of it was my fault, because we stayed in man-to-man a little bit too long,” said Edwards. “But our effort in that fourth quarter was great.”
Isaac Egli had a slow start but ended up piling up 17 points to lead the Wolves. Max Edwards added 10.
Overall, the South Division won 12 of the 16 games played, including all eight on the boys’ side. The North Division did split games on the girls’ side, although included in that was a forfeit win for WACO, as Notre Dame didn’t have enough healthy players for the game.
