SPORTS BRIEFS: Fairfield Little League, bowling, Polar Plunge

Bowling

Another week of the Braves and Maidens bowling league has come to a close.

Team Hopi finished first with a 7-2 record. Places two through nine were Kiowa, Cheyenne, Navahoe, Sioux, Chippewa, Mohicans, Commanche and Iroquois.

Dennis Arbaugh had the highest individual game score with a 228. Alyssa Chatfield had the highest ladies single game score after she bowled a 200.

Frank Chatfield bowled a 216, which was the only other score of more than 200.

Week 2 of the Chief League is also completed.

Kurtz Dozing finished in first, followed by Hideaway, Best Western, Odd Balls-Taco John?s, Queen Pins, Hideaway 2 and Holder Plumbing.

Cathy Lathrop bowled the league high score with a 221. Andy Audas came in second with a 183.

Little League

Last year, Fairfield Little League began a three year plan that it called Operation Facelift.

Throughout the last year, Fairfield Little League has been able to secure an additional two acres of land that will become the new batting cages, bullpens and two new dugouts. It has also started work on a complete revamp of the field?s playing surface, as well as tiling the entire facility.

The next item on the wish list is a new pressbox on the Major Boys? field. The current pressbox has deteriorated to the point that a complete replacement is necessary.

Fairfield Little League counts on donations/sponsorships to achieve its goals. The total cost for a new pressbox is $4500.

Fairfield Little League believes the new pressbox will be an improvement for multiple reasons:

? It will have a storage shed underneath, which will replace ?the pitcher?s eye,? and will comply with Little League International guidelines.

? The stairs will be placed behind it, as opposed to beside it, making extra space for spectators to watch the game from behind the plate.

? The material will be the same as used for the pressbox on the softball field (sheet metal), which will last longer than what is there currently.

?The green poles that extend out behind the current backstop will be removed. These have been a hazard since they were installed.

All donations are greatly appreciated, however as an extra incentive, any business/individual donating at least $100 will have their name placed on one of the walls of the new pressbox.

Polar Plunge

The Fairfield Park and Recreation Department?s 10th Annual Polar Plunge will be Sat. Feb. 8, at Waterworks Park.

Proceeds from the event will help raise funds for the Fairfield Tree Restoration Project. Money raised also helps the Fairfield Parks and Rec Department in general.

Each participant must follow six rules in order to plunge: must mail or deliver the completed pre-registration form and registration minimum; must solicit contributions from family, friends, businesses, etc.; the minimum total contribution per Polar Bear is $30; must check-in as a group to be ?heated? together; can wear anything but a wet suit and shoes are required; and they must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
