The 2023 State baseball tournaments, which were held both in Carroll and Iowa City finished up on Friday, and the top-seeded teams in each bracket won three of the four tournaments.
In Iowa City, Johnston won a thrilling Class 4A final. The top-seeded Dragons rallied back from a 5-4 deficit in the seventh to force extra innings and then walk off Ames, 6-5.
Johnston scored 24 runs over its three-game week. The Dragons defeated Iowa City Liberty 9-3 in the quarterfinals and Dowling Catholic 9-4 in the semis.
Likewise, top-ranked Western Dubuque got things done in Class 3A.
After ousting Harlan 10-0 and Wahlert Catholic 7-4 in previous rounds, Western Dubuque took on second-seeded North Polk in the Class 3A final. The Bobcats rolled to a 6-2 victory to make it a sweep in Iowa City for the top-seeded teams.
In Carroll, top-seeded Beckman Catholic rolled to a championship. Beckman bounced Underwood 7-1 to win the state title.
Previously, Beckman had to rally back to forced extras and then walk off Pella Christian 5-4 in the quarterfinals. After that, the Trailblazers trounced West Lyon 11-2. West Lyon was the team that defeated Van Buren County by one run in the quarterfinals.
Class 1A was the only class that didn’t see the top seed win. Instead, second-seeded Remsen St. Mary’s beat fifth-seeded Lisbon 7-4 in the final.
Remsen St. Mary’s was coming off a second-place finish last year. New London 8-7 in the state title game last year.
In Class 1A, the top seed was Kingsley-Pierson, but that squad was bounced 5-3 by Lisbon in the semifinals.
