State football championships begin Thursday
Class 8-Player title game kicks off 2-day schedule

The 2023 Iowa high school state football championships begin on Thursday morning, as all seven classes will decide its titleholder on either Thursday or Friday.
The Class 8-Player matchup will be between unranked Bishop Garrigan and No. 2 Bedford. Bishop Garrigan is the only team in the title games not to appear in the final Iowa High School Athletic Association football rankings.
The eight-player game will kick off at 9:30 a.m., with a Class A clash between third-ranked West Hancock and second-ranked Woodbury Central following.
The first No. 1 team to play will be Grundy Center, which takes on fourth-ranked MFL MarMac in the Class 1A title game.
That night, the only No. 1 vs. No. 2 game of the Thursday slate will finish things off, as Top-ranked Western Dubuque and second-ranked Lewis Central go at it.
Three games will takes place on Friday, beginning with another No. 1 vs. No. 2 match up between Central Lyon/George Little Rock and Van Meter for the Class 2A championship.
Later in the day on Friday, No. 3 Williamsburg faces No. 8 Bishop Heelan in the Class 3A championship game, and in the nightcap, top-ranked Southeast Polk faces No. 7 Ankeny in the Class 5A title game.
