State softball first round update
No. 1 seeds survive first round tests

FORT DODGE — The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Tournament kicked off on Monday.
Through two days of action, there’s been plenty of drama through the opening and consolation rounds.
If one things for certain through round one, it’s that the No. 1 seeds reined supreme as all five are still alive and kicking.
In Class 5A, No. 1 Valley (37-4) took care of business against No. 8 seeded Prairie (24-18) 11-1.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 5A quarterfinal, but the top rated Tigers rattled off their 11 unanswered runs through the following four innings.
Valley’s opponent in the semifinal will be No. 5 Ankeny (22-20). The Hawks slipped by No. 4 Waukee Northwest (33-8) 2-0. After four scoreless innings, Ankeny scored a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth to win it.
In the bottom half of the 5A bracket, No. 2 Pleasant Valley (38-3) is heading to the semifinal with an 8-7 victory over No. 7 Waukee (20-18).
Waukee controlled the majority of it quarterfinal against the Spartans, building a 5-0 lead through four innings.
However, Pleasant Valley stormed back tying the game with five runs between the sixth and seventh.
Waukee quickly regained the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth, but Pleasant Valley walked it off with a three run final frame.
One first round upset in the tournament thus far came in the form of No. 6 Urbandale’s (23-18) 10-9 victory over No. 3 Muscatine (27-11). The J-Hawks will play Pleasant Valley in the semifinal.
Muscatine led 6-4 after three innings, but six unanswered from the J-Hawks put them up 10-6. The Muskies nearly completed the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but they couldn’t quite get it done.
In the consolation rounds on Tuesday, Waukee Northwest downed Prairie 4-0, while Muscatine got the 10-0 win over Waukee.
In Class 4A, top seeded North Polk (37-4) dominated No. 8 Western Dubuque (30-10) 7-2. The Comets broke a 1-1 first inning tie with six unanswered runs and the Bobcats couldn’t get back into it.
North Polk will take on No. 4 ADM (30-9) in the semifinals. The Tigers defeated hometown Fort Dodge (30-13) 2-0. Both of ADM’s runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top half of the 4A bracket, No. 7 Carlisle (35-8) notched one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, downing No. 2 Dallas Center-Grimes (32-9) 8-6.
Another upset came in the form of No. 6 North Scott’s (31-5) 2-0 victory over No. 3 Norwalk (29-8). North Scott and Carlisle will battle it out in the semifinal.
In the fifth place matchups on Tuesday, Norwalk defeated Dallas Center-Grimes 3-1 and Fort Dodge bested Fort Dodge 7-6.
Class 3A’s winners were all higher seeds.
No. 1 Benton (32-7) defeated No. 8 Solon (18-25) 5-1 in the two’s quarterfinal matchup.
The Bobcats get No. 4 Davenport Assumption (26-12-1) in the semifinal round. The Knights edged Estherville Lincoln Central (31-7) 6-5 in the quarters.
Assumption scored four runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth, while holding off a late Estherville rally to grab the state victory.
On the opposite side of the bracket, No. 2 Williamsburg (31-12) downed No. 7 PCM (24-5) 8-3.
The Raiders and Mustangs were knotted at 3-3 up until Williamsburg scored five straight through the fifth and sixth.
Williamsburg is set to battle No. 3 Wahlert Catholic (30-13) in the semifinals. The Golden Eagles won against Sumner-Fredericksburg (33-4) 9-8.
In the consolation rounds, PCM defeated Sumner-Fredericksurg 3-1. Solon and Estherville Lincoln Center will play on Wednesday.
In Class 2A, No. 1 Van Meter (41-1) walloped No. 8 West Fork (18-8) 10-0.
The Bulldogs get No. 4 East Marshall (33-4) in round two. The Mustangs downed Lisbon (27-13) 8-1 in the quarterfinals. Seven of East Marshall’s runs came in the second inning.
Another two seeded upset came in the matchup between No. 2 Northeast (27-8) and No. 7 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (23-13) 6-1.
The Rockets and Rebels were tied at 1-1 after two innings, but EBF scored five unanswered to seal it.
The Rockets will take on No. 3 Audubon (28-4) in their next matchup. The Wheelers topped No. 6 West Monona (33-8) 4-3.
West Fork versus Lisbon and Northeast versus West Monona will take place on Wednesday.
In Class 1A, No. 1 Martensdale-St. Marys (29-6) just slipped by No. 8 Edgewood-Colesburg (29-11) 2-1.
The Blue Devils matchup up with No. 4 St. Edmond (26-5) in the semifinals. The Gaels defeated Collins-Maxwell (27-4) 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
St. Edmond broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to get by the Spartans.
In the bottom of the bracket, No. 7 Southeast Warren (24-2) got a big upset with a 3-2 win over No. 2 Wayne (24-5).
Southeast Warren will take on No. 6 Sigourney (24-7) in the semifinals. The Savages handed No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s (23-1) its first loss of the season 3-1.
Wayne and Remsen St. Mary’s along with Edgewood-Coleburg and Collins-Maxwell will play against on Tuesday.
