FT. DODGE - The 2019 Iowa high school softball season is officially done. The IGHSAU state softball tournament ended this weekend with championship games in all five classes.
The one local team left in the tournament was Louisa-Muscatine, the two seed in Class 3A. They went down 7-4 against top-seeded Davenport Assumption.
The Falcons gave up the first seven runs of the game. Assumption scored two runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third. L&M put up four in the fourth but could never fully rebound from their rough start.
The top seed also won in a wild Clsas 1A championship. No. 1 Collins-Maxwell gritted out a 4-3 win over No. 3 Clarksville, coming back from a 3-2 deficit in the sixth.
In Class 1A, North Linn won from the No. 1 seed, shutting down Alta-Aurelia 3-0. North Linn scored two runs in the second and one in the sixth. Starting pitcher Abby Flanagan struck out 16 batters in a shutout four-hitter.
The top two teams went at it in the Class 4A championship. Carlisle defeated North Scott 1-0, scoring the only run of the ballgame in the third inning.
The only class that wasn't won by the top seed was Class 5A. Seventh-seeded West Des Moines Valley pulled off three upsets in the tournament to win the title, defeating No. 1 Waukee 8-5 in the championship game. Waukee held a 4-2 lead after the second and third innings, but Valley scored six runs over the last four frames to steal the game.
The Class 5A title game marked the end of the IGHSAU sports season. Girls' sports in the state of Iowa will open back up when the volleyball teams hit the court in late August.
