State wrestling: Day 1

DES MOINES — Day 1 of the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines has come and gone, and the Union area still has six wrestlers with a chance to bring home a state title.
In Class 2A, Fairfield’s Cael McCabe (106), Washington’s Aaron Boone (132) and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union’s Russel Coil (285) all made the quarterfinals. In Class 1A, WACO’s Gage Samo (113) and Louden Huisenga (190) both moved on with a pair of wins, as did Luke Guseman of Highland at 120.
Also in Class 2A, Fairfield’s Cason Miller and Dain Burkhart each picked up one win and one loss on the day, as did Columbus/WMU’s Ty Scorpil (126) and Kason Dopler (175).
In Class 1A, Gage Burden (126) of New London and Isaac Cox (285) of Cardinal each picked up one win as well.
Every area wrestler still is in the field either in the winner’s bracket or wrestlebacks as of Thursday morning.
