WAPELLO ? Trenton Northup blasted two home runs and Pekin split a doubleheader with Wapello Friday evening losing game one 6-4 and bouncing back for a 6-0 victory in game two.
Northup?s solo home run was a part of a four-run first inning for Pekin in the opener ? an inning that saw Wapello bounce back for three runs in the bottom half.
?We were really swinging the bats well to start game one, but we turned around and made a couple errors just to give three runs right back,? said head coach Jeff Eeling.
Cody Millikin took the loss on the mound for the Panthers with just three of the six runs being earned. Millikin also totaled 10 strikeouts in the game.
Zach Mosbey and Gabe Dyer each laced a double and Dyer was credited with two RBIs for Pekin.
Dalton Stone was the story in game two for the Panthers as the junior fooled Wapello batters from start to finish and ended up with a six inning no-hitter ? just two walks away from a perfect game ? and racked up 12 strikeouts.
?Dalton was just nasty in the second game, and the curveball was on,? Eeling said. ?They were almost completely baffled with what to do with it. His fastball also had good pop, great location, walking just two.?
Stone walked the second batter of the game before really locking in and not allowing another base runner until walking the same batter in the seventh-inning.
Northup provided all the offense Stone needed with a fifth-inning shot to dead center field that scored two runs.
?Trenton?s went to the opposite field in the first game ? keeping his shoulder closed and driving the ball is something he?s been working on. The second one was just an absolute shot over the center field fence,? said Eeling. ?It?s also nice to see Gabe Dyer swinging well too because he?s been working hard in the cage and has gotten much better.?
Dyer followed up the two RBI performance in game one with another RBI double in game two. Kyle Paul was 2-4 with a double and Mosbey also hit an RBI double for Pekin.
The Panthers have Monday night off before hosting Columbus in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
