FAIRFIELD - Saturday will be the second competition of 2020 for Trojans whose sport is in the water.
The Fairfield High School girls swim team will travel to Muscatine for a multiple team meet.
Familiar teams Burlington and Keokuk will be there as will Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Tipton and Williamsburg.
'I think everyone is grateful for the opportunity to come and swim,” Fairfield head girls swimming coach Brittany Winslow said. 'We don't know how long this will last. It could all get shut down like the seasons in the spring did.”
Fairfield started the season with a multiple-dual meet in Ottumwa last Thursday. The Trojans lost to 99-47 and to Oskaloosa 91-55, but defeated Centerville 90-12.
Freshman Willow Larsen scored two wins for the Trojans.
'Willow trains and competes year-round,” Winslow said. 'She has swam most of her life and already competes with promising times.” Larsen won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.28 seconds and the 100-yard breast stroke in 1 minute, 16.53 seconds. Emma Clubb won the 500 freestyle in 7:20.22.
'Since Muscatine is an invitational, I am more focused on the girls swimming their personal best,” Winslow said. 'We swim some much larger teams, so we know an overall meet win is not likely.”
Fairfield lost eight seniors from last year's squad, but there are nine returning letterwinners. They are Clare Else, Ella Weigert, Anna Westphal, Emma Clubb, Dakota Wages, Delaney Breen, Jenna Norris, Grace Sobaski and Viola Welsh.
Winslow has a tentative lineup for Muscatine where Else will likely swim the 200 individual medley, the 200 free, 100 breast and join the 200 and 400 relays with Sobaski, Clubb and Larsen. Lilly Huff, Norris and Westphal will form another relay team with Breen in the 200 and Welsh in the 400. The 200 medley relay will be Huff, Welsh, Breen and Norris.
Breen's individual events are the 100 fly and the 100 back. Westphal will swim the 100 and 200 free. Huff will do the 100 backstroke. Clubb swims the 50 free and the 500 free. Norris is slated for the 100 free. Sobaski is the 200 free and the 100 breast. Welsh is 50 free and 100 breast. Larsen is in the 200 IM and the 100 back.
'We are excited for the season this year and look forward to improving every week,” Winslow said.
