The Iowa boys basketball season continues to near its end, and with just three weeks to go fans now have an idea of who their team will play in the post season.
Thanks to the release of the 2022 Basketball Postseason District Assignments from the Iowa High School Athletic Association, both Class 1A and 2A teams have a look at their competition following the regular season.
For Union area teams it’s sure to be a robust journey to the state tournament.
Class 2A District 12
District 12 is the only Class 2A district that holds Union area teams. Those teams include Mid-Prairie (14-0), Cardinal (9-6), and Van Buren County (2-11).
Other teams included in the district are Mediapolis (11-3), West Burlington (8-6), and Central Lee (0-14).
No. 6 rated Mid-Prairie is the clear favorite to advance. Cardinal has wins over three of the teams in the district, West Burlington, Van Buren County, and Central Lee. Van Buren County has struggled this season, but can’t be slept on.
Class 1A District 9
Danville (13-1) and Winfield-Mt. Union (14-1) are the two favorites out of this district.
Along with Winfield-Mt. Union, the other area teams include Hillcrest Academy (9-2), Columbus (3-11) and Highland (1-13).
Wapello (8-7), Lone Tree (3-11), Notre Dame (4-10), and Holy Trinity Catholic (3-12) are the other teams featured in district 9.
Winfield has lost just one game this season, coming from the hands of WACO. Hillcrest Academy’s two losses came from Southeast Iowa Super Conference North leaders Winfield and second place Mediapolis.
Two of Columbus’ three victories came against Lone Tree and Highland. Highland’s lone victory was against Lone Tree.
Class 1A District 10
District 10 is full of potential tournament worthy teams.
New London (11-1) is one of those top teams, ranking seventh in class 1A.
WACO (12-3), is right there with the Tigers, and recently got the better of them on Jan. 22. It was New London first loss. WACO’s three losses came from the New London, West Burlington and Danville.
Pekin (6-9), is another of the Union area teams within this district. The Panthers are going in blind as they haven’t had experience with any of the opposition.
Keota (7-8), has had an up and down season thus far. The Eagles haven’t played either New London or Pekin this year, but they do have experience with the other six teams in the district and also matched up with WACO once this season.
Rounding out district 10 are Montezuma (11-3), Iowa Valley (11-3), English Valleys (10-6), Sigourney (9-7), BGM (4-12), and Tri-County (0-13).
Class 3A districts will be released on Friday, Jan 28.
