KEOKUK ? Foreign exchange student Ena Alcan stepped into the No. 1 singles spot for the Fairfield girls? tennis team and picked up the lone win of the day in the opener at Keokuk.
Alcan cruised past Keokuk?s Ashley Longshore by a score of 10-4 in the Trojans? 8-1 loss Monday. Longshore teamed up with Thea Dennia to beat Alcan and Dana Diers 10-3 in No. 1 doubles.
Jennifer Clements, Megan Palmer, Alex Higdon and Dallas Grijalva were also on the varsity court for the season opener.
In JV action, Devin Maynard picked up singles and doubles victories for the Trojans. She won 8-1 in singles and paired up with Kim O?Carroll to win doubles 6-2.
Keokuk blanks Fairfield boys
Keokuk swept Fairfield by a 9-0 score in Tuesday?s boys? tennis opener, but it wasn?t without some excitement at No. 1 singles.
After splitting the first two sets 6-3, 6-3 Keokuk?s Andrew Schulte rallied from a big deficit in the super tiebreaker to win the match. Fairfield freshman Girindra Selleck jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the tiebreaker, but Schulte rattled off the next seven points to win the match.
The Chiefs also took care of the rest of the Trojan lineup on their way to the shutout victory to open the season.
Next up for Fairfield is Thursday?s trip to take on Mount Pleasant.
