The Gazette’s week 1 Iowa high school football rankings

As expected, it was a eventful first week of Iowa high school football action, for the Union area especially.

Entering week one, the area had four teams gracing the top 10 of The Gazette’s preseason football rankings in their perspective classes.

Winfield-Mt. Union sat at No. 4 in the 8-Player rankings, followed by WACO at No. 10.

In Class A, Columbus Community was rated No. 5 and in Class 1A Sigourney-Keota was slotted at No. 4.

Things have changed a bit for the quartet of Union area squads.

Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO have both made a jump in the rankings heading into the second week of the season. That is to be expected after the Wolves and Warriors were both winners in ranked showdowns.

WMU topped No. 3 (8-Player) Central City, 44-36, while WACO downed then No. 7 Fremont-Mills 26-20.

The Wolves are now tied for No. 2 in the class with Anita CAM.

Meanwhile, the Warriors now sit at No. 5 in the 8-Player poll, tied with Remsen St. Mary’s.

As for Columbus and Sigourney-Keota, the pair have fallen out of the rankings this week after suffering defeats.

Columbus was topped by now ranked No. 8 (Class 2A) Mediapolis on the road, 33-7. The Wildcats are just outside the top 10 and are the next highest vote-getters.

For Sigourney-Keota, week one ended with a loss to now No. 6 (Class 2A) Monroe PCM, 22-15.

The Cobras are just outside the top 10 in the rankings now, sitting four spots outside the rankings.

Through all the rankings, all seven No. 1 teams still hold their top spot, Southeast Polk in 5A, Cedar Rapids Xavier in 4A, Mount Vernon in 3A, Van Meter in 2A, Grundy Center in 1A, West Hancock in A and Gladbrook-Reinbeck in 8-player.
