Union area sends 14 girls to state wrestling tournament

WILLIAMSBURG — Area girls wrestlers were in Williamsburg and Solon on Saturday to try their hands out at the 2024-25 regional wrestling tournaments with hopes to make this week’s state meet in Coralville.
In all, 14 area wrestlers will by vying for a spot at the 2025 state meet, which will kick off at Xtreme Arena on Thursday morning.
In Williamsburg, it was the Pekin Panthers that led the way for the Union coverage area. The Panthers put four girls through to state, with all four taking second place in their respective brackets. In each bracket, only two wrestlers move on.
Pekin’s Lexa Nelson won four matches on the day at 105 pounds. That included a pin fall over Fairfield’s Alyia Abbott in the second-place match.
Lila Miller won three matches at 135, including the second-place match. Hailey Pedrick fell in the 140-pound championship after winning her first two matches, and Rylee Frye won the second place match at 235, pinning Mt. Pleasant’s Olivia Gordy.
Sigourney-Keota had three wrestlers get through, including defending state champion Reanah Utterback, who rolled through the 115-pound bracket to win first place, staying undefeated in her two-year run of wrestling only girls.
Kia Montgomery finished second at 125 for the Cobras, winning two matches before falling in the championship. Karley Greiner took second at 155, winning two matches before falling in the championship.
Fairfield had two wrestlers go through, including a championship from Kendra Allison at 235 pounds. Allison defeated Mt. Pleasant’s Gordy in the first place match to cap off a 3-0 run.
Samantha Lyons is heading back to state for Fairfield. Lyons went 2-1 at 170 pounds to punch her ticket.
Mt. Pleasant’s Zenlynn Lee took first place at 145 pounds. She’ll make her state wrestling debut after going 3-0, picking up pins in every single round.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union’s Jada Moats will represent the Wildcats at state. Moats went 2-1 at 190 pounds, including a pin fall over Cardinals Joey Tedro in the 2nd place match.
Mid-Prairie had three wrestlers move on to the state tournament from the Solon regional. All three Golden Hawks finished second.
Gabby Gingerich went 2-1 at 115 pounds to earn her spot in the state tournament. Ashlee Farrier went 3-1 at 130 pounds, including a pin fall in the second place match, and Layken Lee had to win six matches on the day, including a pin fall for second place.
