WASHINGTON — Washington and Burlington met for the first time on the hardwood Friday night.
In what was a back and forth single digit affair through the opening 16 minutes, turned sour for Washington as Burlington pieced together its most efficient quarter of the night in the third. It turned out to be a deficit of which the Demons couldn’t make up and Burlington walked away winners 72-58.
Through the opening four minutes in the Southeast Conference matchup, the Demons and Grayhounds tied three times ending at 7-7.
To the Demons demise, that is as close as the game would be the rest of the way out.
Burlington followed with seven straight points, nine total to the end of the quarter, while Washington added just two more to its total to make it 17-11 after one.
Starting the second, Burlington kept its momentum up, scoring 12 unanswered before Washington first basket of the period at the 3:34 mark. By that point, the Grayhounds held onto a 29-11 lead.
However, the Demons did not get flustered and turned it around in the final three and a half minutes. A three ball from sophomore Drew Conrad kicked off what would end up bring a 16-3 run to the end of the quarter, which made it just a five point game at the break, 32-27.
As fast as the Demons got back into it, they watched it slip away just as so. Burlington went on to pour in a game high 25 points in the third period, while holding Washington to just 13 of its own.
By the end of the third quarter, Burlington led by 17, 57-40, and they could never make up the difference.
The Demons went on to edge the Grayhounds in the final eight minutes, 18-15, but it wasn’t enough.
With the loss, Washington drops to 4-6 on the season and 2-3 in the SEC standings.
