CEDAR RAPIDS — It was a rough outing for the Iowa Wesleyan Baseball team last Wednesday as the Tigers dropped both of their two games in a doubleheader.
The Tigers were defeated by the University of St. Thomas Tommies, 14-1, and the Mount Mercy University Mustangs, 17-2, in the two contest.
In game one against the Tommies, the Tigers couldn’t get anything going. St. Thomas didn’t have any issues.
Up until the third inning, it looked as if it was going to be a tight knit ordeal, but that wouldn’t be the case.
In the first inning, the Tommies scored three runs right off the bat.
With both teams going scoreless in the second inning, the Tigers were able to close the gap in the top of the third. The Tiger’s Carlos Vicente hit an RBI single to right field, bringing Drew Cook across home plate, cutting the lead to two runs, 3-1.
Iowa Wesleyan wouldn’t score again.
The two point deficit was brief as in the bottom of the third the Tommies poured in nine runs, quickly turning the tide of the game and making it a 12-1 ballgame.
Over the course of the next four innings St. Thomas would score an additional two runs, while Iowa Wesleyan was held scoreless.
In the second of the doubleheader, Mount Mercy struck early and often, while Iowa Wesleyan struggled at the plate.
The Mustangs dominated with the bat, scoring eight runs in the first two innings and adding nine more between the third and sixth inning.
It wasn’t until the Tigers last at-bat in the top of the seventh inning that they got on the board.
Brady Lukavsky hit a two RBI single to center field, scoring Phillip Guerrero and Derek Marrufo.
It was too little too late as the Mustang lead was too great.
Iowa Wesleyan will return to the field on Wednesday, March 23, playing host to Culver-Stockton College in Mt. Pleasant. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
