It was a tough weekend for the IW baseball team. The Tigers fell in three-straight games to Westminster to drop to 2-8 in the SLIAC standings. The Blue Jays took game one 14-1 on Friday night, and beat IW 8-2 and 15-0(8) on Saturday.
Westminster scored the first two runs of the game on Friday night, tallying one in each of the first two innings. Jack De Burgh scored Chazz Brown on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1 but it was all down-hil from there.
Westminster put up two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and five in the ninth to run away with the win.
The Tigers had three hits in the game one loss. Brown, Jacob Leonard and Dominic Gerace each had one knock.
Clayton Lathen took the loss on the hill. He gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings of work, striking out one batter along the way. He was one of five different IW pitchers to see action.
After falling behind 2-0 after 2.5 innings in game two, the Tigers rallied to tie the game. Leonard cut the Westminster lead in half with an RBI single and Nick Salas knocked in a run with an RBI-fielder's choice.
The IW defense played well for the most part in game two, but a rough fourth inning spelled their doom. Westminster scored six runs in the top of the fourth and no more runs crossed throughout the rest of the contest.
De Burgh went 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Tigers in game two. Gerace went 2-3 as well.
Joe Morrison went four innings, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, to get tagged with the loss. He struck out two batters. Brandon Devillier pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Westminster cruised in game three, scoring two in the first, four in the third, one in the fourth, two in the seventh and six in the eighth to end the game one inning early via the 10-run rule.
Parker Leland went 1-2 in the game three loss. Leonard had the only other hit going 1-3.
IW needed to use four pitchers in game three. Everett Swinson was tagged with the loss, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and five walks, while striking out one batter over five innings of work.
IW (4-18-1, 2-8) will look to turn things around on Wednesday, April 10, against Blackburn College. That doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
