BURLINGTON - The New London boys won a premier game in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division on Tuesday night. The Tiger boys stayed undefeated with a 77-62 win over West Burlington, getting revenge for a 68-32 West Burlington win in the girls game.
It took a while for New London to get going. The two teams split the first quarter 14-14, and West Burlington led 34-29 at the half.
It was an entirely different story in the final 16 minutes. New London's offense lit it up, scoring 28 points in the third quarter to take a 57-53 lead into the fourth, and then dropping 20 more in the final eight minutes to run away with the game.
It was yet another huge night from Blaise Porter. He scored 27 points and went 4-for-6 from 3-point range to lead New London to a big conference win.
Kade Benjamin added 21 points for the Tigers. Devon Swanson had 12 points and seven rebounds. Camden Kasel added 12. Caydin Wahls finished with three points and five rebounds, and Torren Riley scored two points.
It was only the second loss for West Burlington, who had impressive wins over Central Lee, Mt. Pleasant, Notre Dame and Holy Trinity before getting knocked off by New London.
The Tiger boys moved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the South Division with the win. They are currently tied with Danville at the top of the standings, and they'll host the rival Bears on Friday night.
The New London girls couldn't hang in there with a stacked West Burlington team. The undefeated Falcons led 22-9 after one quarter, 33-19 at halftime and 56-24 after three periods.
Despite the loss, Keura Williams had a monster day inside. She scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to notch a double-double. Williams also blocked seven shots to lead the squad.
Ashlyn McSorley had seven points and five assists in the loss. Marah Hartrick scored six points. Sophie Malott finished the game with three, and Natalie Burden had two.
The Tiger girls are now 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. They also will be playing the Bears Friday night. The Danville girls will come into that contest 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
