BURLINGTON The Iowa Wesleyan men's soccer team took on Principia College at Bracewell Stadium in Burlington on Saturday, two days after a thrilling 3-2 overtime win at Westminster. The Tigers could not recover from a first half penalty kick by the Panthers and fell 3-0 in the match.
In the first half of play, both defenses were keeping each other in check early. Iowa Wesleyan had a one shot advantage in the half, taking five shots while Principia recorded four shots. Despite the extra shot, it was the Panthers who struck first, scoring on a penalty kick at the 37:34 minute mark. Chris Rimmer recorded his only two saves in the opening period.
The offense picked up in the second half for each team. Iowa Wesleyan took nine shots and Principia added seven shots in the final period. Once again, the Tigers could not find their target in the second half, coming up empty on several opportunities to get on the board. Principia held the Tigers without a goal in the second period, while extending their lead to 3-0 with goals at the 78:31 minute mark and 80:54 minute mark.
Hugo Bonilla and Carlos Mateo led the Tigers with three shots a piece in the match. They also had the only two shots on goal for Iowa Wesleyan in the loss. Francisco Saldana added two shots for IW.
The Tigers are hosting Black Burn College today (Tuesday) in Mediapolis.
