The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team found hits hard to come by on Tuesday afternoon, losing to William Penn University, 5-2, in a Midwest Collegiate Conference game at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.
The Tigers had just six hits against Penn pitching, struggling to score in losing a nine-inning conference game for the second time in three days. With the loss IWC slipped one-half game behind Penn in the MCC standings, dropping to 14-17 overall and 5-3 in conference while the Statesmen are now 11-12 overall and 5-2 in league play.
William Penn pitchers Danny Erece and Jorge Quezada combined to allow six hits and one earned run while striking out nine and walking three. Erece started and went 7 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and striking out six, while Quezada came on for the save and struck out three in the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Tigers had a chance to draw close in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out, but could only muster one run. IWC went quietly the rest of the way, never getting a runner past second in the final three innings.
