ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Iowa Wesleyan women gave heavily-favored Fontbonne a tough first half on Monday, but the Tigers couldn't keep that magic up in the second half. The Griffins scored 57 second-half points to run away with an 84-50 victory.
The Tigers didn't back down despite playing a road game against a probable St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament team. The Tigers held the Griffins to 2-for-16 shooting from behind the 3-point line, but shot just 1-for-9 themselves. Fontbonne led 17-11 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime.
The Griffins came out of the third period on fire. After a tough first half shooting the ball, Fontbonne nailed four 3-pointers in the third quarter and shot over 50 percent from the field. The Griffins outscored IW 26-13 in the third quarter and led 53-35 going into the fourth quarter.
Fontbonne turned it up even more in the fourth quarter, putting up a game-high 31 points in the final period. The Griffins hit four more 3-pointers in the period, out-rebounded the Tigers 14-to-4, and shot over 50 percent once again.
All 50 of IW's points were scored by the starting five. Allie Massner led the way, scoring 14 points on the night.
Morgan McCrea finished the game with 11 points, two assists and two steals. Maddie Williamson had 10 points and two steals.
Sydney Farrar flirted with a double-double, going for nine points nad nine rebounds on the night. Harriet Fowler had six points and co-led the team with two assists.
IW is now 5-19 overall and 5-12 in SLIAC play. They'll end the season at home against Webster University on Saturday.
