Tigers are Class 1A state runners-up
New London’s Phillips earns individual state runner-up honor

BOONE — New London girls golf has been representing at the Class 1A State Golf Tournament for years now.
On Thursday and Friday, the Tigers did it once again taking on Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.
New London ended the 10 team tournament with a second-place finish. The Tigers scored a team total of 729.
Individually, the Tiger’s Taylor Phillips carded a runner-up finish with a final score of 160.
Through the opening day, it was all New London and eventual state champion Grundy Center.
New London opened the tournament with a first round score of 364. That was 13 shots behind the Spartans, 351, but 25 strokes better than third-place BCLUW, 389.
Phillips led the Tiger through Day One and her 78 was good enough for first overall heading into round two.
Sophie Malott shot a 91 through round one, tying her for 12th.
Emma Busby tied for 21st through 18 with a 96. Tying for 25th was Emma Nye with a 99. Isabelle Nye shot a 115 for a tie at 59th and Stevey Wintermeyer finished 66th with a 123.
Highland’s Kelsi Cerny also competed in the state tournament.
Cerny finished her opening round with a 105, tying for 43rd.
With a commanding hold on second heading into day two, the Tigers needed an outstanding day to catch Grundy Center in first.
Through the second day, the Tiger nearly match their opening round, finishing just one stroke higher than the first, 365.
The final round brought the Tigers’ total to 729. That was 42 shots better than third-place West Branch, 771.
Grundy Center won the title after finishing round two with a 355 and a final of 706.
Phillips ended her state tournament run with an 82. She totaled 160 through two rounds.
Just one shot separated Phillips from the state title as Grundy Center’s Abbie Lindeman finished with 159.
Emma Nye made quite the jump in day two. Her 87 propelled her into 12th overall with a 186.
Emma Busby carded a 95 after the second for a final of 191 and good enough for 23rd.
Following one shot behind was Sophie Malott with a 101 and a final of 192. That gave Malott a 24th place finish.
Isabelle Nye shot a 109 on her final day for a total of 224. That placed Nye in 59th.
Stevey Wintermeyer ended with a 115 to total 238. She finished 67th overall.
Highland’s Cerny golfed a 104 in round two for a final score of 209. That placed her 45th.
