NEW LONDON - The New London baseball team jumped all over Danville in their SEISC South Division match up on Monday night. The Tigers needed just four innings to beat their chief rivals, knocking them off 15-0 .
The Tigers wasted no time, loading the bases in the first inning. They scored three runs in the first and added four in the second to take a 7-0 lead.
New London didn't let up in the third inning. In fact, they doubled their lead with a seven-run third inning. After that, they just needed to plate one in the fourth, which they did when Kooper Schulte hit an RBI single for the 15-run rule walkoff.
It was New London's second dominating win of the year against Danville. The Tigers beat them 15-0 in five at their place earlier this season.
'You definitely want to take care of business and not let them hang around,” Said head coach Brad Helmerson after the game. 'Just make sure that we're taking swings at good pitches and making the plays in the field. It doesn't matter who you're playing, you have to play at the same level.”
Jaxon Allen had a big day on the mound and at the plate to lead the Tigers. On the mound, he threw four shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out three batters. Offensively, Allen went 3-3 with four RBIs.
Schulte went 2-3 with four RBIs. Carter Allen was 1-2 with four RBIs. Ryan Richey was 2-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Shae Summerfield was 0-1 with an RBI.
The Tigers moved 4-8 overall. They'll have a short break before heading to Kalona to play Iowa Mennonite on Friday, June 21.
After the game, Coach Helmerson talked about the team's goals as they enter the last three weeks of regular season play. He says it's all about getting prepared for the district tournament.
'It has nothing to do with record,” Helmerson said. 'We just want to be playing our best ball when we go into the postseason. Districts are out now, so we know who's in it, and there is no easy ride in that one.”
