BURLINGTON - Burlington High School hosted a highway 34 triple-threat match on Thursday night and No. 4 (Class 1A) New London picked up two wins before traveling back west.
New London toppled Mt. Pleasant 59-12 and Burlington 43-30 to own the night. Burlington edged Mt. Pleasant 42-36 in the opening dual, a Southeats Conference matchup that dropped the Panthers to 2-3 in conference play.
Mt. Pleasant started up the Burlington dual on a 30-6 run, winning six of the first seven matches on the night. After forfeiting 195 pounds, the Panther grabbed their first win at 220 pounds on a 12-6 decision by Trevor Wellington, and Sam Carrasco had a 31-second pin at 285 pounds. Carson Coleman had a pin at 120 pounds and Corbin Broeker won the 126-pound match on a 12-5 decision.
The Grayhounds battled back with 24-straight points of their own, including pins at 152 pounds and 160 pounds. Jaden Davis picked up a pin for Mt. Pleasant at 160 pounds, but Burlington won the last three matches.
New London was able to flex its muscle against the Panthers, getting pins from Marcel Lopez at 113 pounds, Boden Pickle at 152 pounds, Currey Jacobs at 170 pounds, Gavin Holmes at 182 pounds and Jaxon Allen at 220 pounds. Dominic Lopez started his night with a technical fall at 138 pounds.
Despite the 0-2 night, Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint said he saw some positives from his young squad.
'We saw a lot of good things from some of our underclassmen,” Blint said. 'We're only wrestling with two seniors in the lineup tonight, and one junior. We're putting a lot of kids out there that shouldn't be wrestling at the varsity level, but they're sucking it up and they're going out there and battling.”
Burlington battled with New London in the final dual of the night, but the Tigers wouldn't be denied a 2-0 night. New London received pins from Josh Glendening at 120 pounds, Carter at 160 pounds and Allen at 220 pounds to hold off the Hounds.
'Burlington and Mt. Pleasant are fun because they are local,” said New London coach Mark Chiri. 'When I first came to New London, we used to wrestling them every year. They've got athletes. We have to learn how to compete with those guys. Any day you can beat Mt. Pleasant and Burlington is good with me.”
