NEW LONDON — New London hosted Pekin in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and South battle on Monday night.
When the dust settled it was the South Division Tigers who prevailed with the 8-4 victory.
The Tigers settled in early, shutting out the Panthers in the first inning, while bringing two runs home in the bottom of the first frame.
Pekin had answers though as it erased New London’s two run lead with a trio of runs in the second inning.
New London knotted the game, 3-3, an inning later.
Things really started to heat up in the fourth inning and it would make all the difference.
The Panthers once again gained the advantage with a single run in the opening half of the fourth, but the Tigers rattled off a game high four runs in their half of the inning as Brendan Richey and Michael Raines tallied RBIs.
New London would never give it up.
The Tigers locked in defensively and shutout the Panthers through the final three innings, while adding an additional run in the sixth.
Brendan Richey, Michael Raines and Gage Burden all finished with two hits and two RBIs in the Tigers’ win. Gavin Menke-Bailey, Tate Welcher and Cale Westerbeck each had two hits as well.
Memphis Watson and Menke-Bailey gave up a combined nine hits, four runs (four earned) on the mound with six strikeouts.
For Pekin, Brogan Spray had two hits and an RBI. Tanner Adrian, Will Adam and Sven Dahlstrom all had RBIs as well.
New London improves to 5-6 with the win, while Pekin drops to 5-7.
