Tigers sweep in West Burlington

NEW LONDON -The New London baseball and softball teams picked upa c ouple of big wins at West Burlington on Thursday, sweeping the Falcons in SEISC South Division play.
The Tiger boys won 3-2 on a walkoff two-RBI single from Seth Bailey in the bottom of the seventh. The girls snapped a nine-game losing streak, beating the Falcons 4-1.
In the bottom of the first, Darius Whaley led off with a double. After moving to third base on a Shae Summerfield groundout, Whaley scored on a groundout by Carter Allen. That gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead after one inning.
West Burlington stole the lead in the sixth inning. The Falcons scored two runs, capitalizing on a couple of New London errors to grab a 2-1 lead.
New London had only collected one hit from the second to sixth innings but the offense woke up in a big way when the final half-inning rolled around.
Allen led off with a single. Ryan Richey worked a walk to put two on and no outs, and then it was time for Bailey, a pinch hitter, to deliver the final blow.
Bailey knocked both runners home to deliver the rare three-batter walk-off win after entering the final inning down one.
New London had just four hits int he win. Bailey was 1-1 with two RBIs. Allen went 1-3 with an RBI and a run. Whaley was 1-3 with a double, and Jaxon Allen went 1-3.
Carter and Jaxon Allen combined for a three-hit performance on the mound. Carter threw six and one-third innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out six batters. Jaxon picked up the win, getting two outs on two pitches in the seventh.
The softball team was tied with West Burlington through 3.5 innings. The two teams entered the bottom of the fourth inning scoreless, but New London put two up in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Falcons scored their only run in the seventh inning.
Chloe Heitmeier had a great game in the circle. She threw a complete game, giving up just one earned run on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.
Offensively, Ashlyn McSorley was 1-2 with a double and two RBIs. Layney Loyd was 1-2 with a double and an RBI. Marah Hartrick went 2-3 with a double.
New London moved to 5-10 in baseball and 8-12 in softball. The boys will host Moravia tonight (Monday) at 6 p.m., and both teams will take on Winfield-Mt. Union on Wednesday, July 3.
