DONNELLSON - It wasn't a pretty night for the New London basketball teams on Tuesday when they traveled to Central Lee for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division doubleheader. The 10th-ranked Tiger boys had their undefeated start spoiled, 59-55, and the girls fell 68-41.
The New London boys held as much as an 11-point lead, at 44-33, in the final minutes of the third quarter, but Central Lee found the hot hand to cut the lead to 49-47 after three quarters.
The Hawks hit a trifecta of 3-pointers early in the third quarter, and New London didn't score a single point in the final five minutes.
Devin Swanson and Camden Kasel scored 13 points apiece for the Tiger boys.
The New London girls couldn't slow down Central Lee stand out Mya Merschman, who scored an incredible 50 points for the Hawks. Merschman was already averaging 27.4 points per game before Tuesday night, but nearly doubled that to score the majority of the Hawks' points.
New London's Marah Hartrick scored 17 points in a loss.
The Tiger boys are now 5-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The girls are 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference. Both teams will be at Mt. Pleasant on January 4.
