BURLINGTON — The Iowa Wesleyan men’s soccer team was stunned by Fontbonne University in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal game on Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Griffins upset the second-seeded Tigers, 1-0.
Fontbonne’s Trent Calvert scored in the 24th minute to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. They would hold that lead for the rest of the night.
The Tiger men had 12 shots on goal to Fontbonne’s six. Xavier Lozada led Iowa Wesleyan with six of his own. Francisco Javier Saldana had two.
Vincent Sanchis faced six shots on goal on the night and saved five. He went all 90 minutes in net.
It was a bitter ending for a Wesleyan squad that was picked in the preseason to win the conference title. They finished the season 6-2-2.
