Kali Hills and Jill Ginder had run-scoring hits in the second inning and the Iowa Wesleyan College softball team defeated Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University 3-2 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.
??The Tigers bounced back from a 10-1 loss in the first game of the doubleheader, splitting two games with the Trojans to move to 9-26 overall this year. The games were being made up after originally being postponed on March 25.?
Wesleyan scored all of its runs in the first two innings in the second game. Leigha Strong hit a solo home run in the first inning, and the Tigers mounted a rally with two outs in the second. Hills doubled in Ashley Mysliwiec to give IWC the lead, and Ginder followed with an RBI single to score Hills for a 3-1 lead.?
The Trojans (18-22 overall) came back with a run in the third on an RBI single by McKenzie Schopp, but were shut down the rest of the way. IWC also had just one more hit the rest of the way as the game developed into a pitcher?s battle between Ayla Serrano and Kachina Hudson, but Serrano picked up the complete game win, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walking one for her fifth win of the season.?
Hannibal-LaGrange won the first game on the strength of a seven-run third inning to overcome an early IWC lead. The Tigers led 1-0 after Hannah Milligan hit an RBI single in the first inning, but the Trojans scored all seven of their runs in the third with two outs. Wesleyan committed two errors after two outs and also missed the tag on a fielder?s choice that would?ve ended the inning.?
HLGU continued to pull away with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Schopp picked up the complete game win, allowing five hits and one unearned run in five innings.?
Iowa Wesleyan takes to the road again Wednesday night, getting back into Midwest Collegiate Conference action with a doubleheader against Mount Mercy University at 6 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
