Tigers, Wolves on to districts
New London, Winfield-Mount Union survive Wapello boys’ golf sectional; Columbus’ Watson and Highland’s Yeggy move on individually

WAPELLO — Heritage Oaks Golf and Country club saw the area’s Class 1A boys golf teams clash for a spot in the district tournament on Wednesday, and local teams didn’t disappoint.
New London and Winfield-Mount Union were neck-and-neck all day long, and both earned a qualifying spot at next week’s districts, as the Tigers shot 365, for second place, and WMU shot 367, for third.
Both teams were upended by hosting Wapello, which shot a 345 to win the sectional meet.
New London’s Mason Shelledy paced the Tigers once again, shooting 84 on the day. Shelledy earned a playoff against Wapello’s Casey Short for medalist honors. Short came out on top, and Shelledy finished runner-up.
Weston Miller shot 89 to give New London two players under 90. Wyatt Miller finished at 94. Coen Fitzpatrick rounded out the scorers, with an 89. Sullivan Barron shot 104, and Vegas Watson ended at 115.
Carter Loyd led WMU with an 89 on the day. That earned him sixth place overall. Andrew Brown and Nicholas Sparrow ended the day at 91.
Jake Edwards and Max Edwards both shot 96 for the Wolves. Konner Kinneberg ended the day at 72.
Highland was the first team out in the standings, as the Huskies shot 424 to finish fourth. Peyton Yeggy, however, did enough to earn a shot individually, shooting 92.
Yeggy finished 11th overall, but was the second-best score outside of the qualifying teams. Colton Sypherd shot 100 on the day. William Dunbar ended at 113, and Isaac Kleese ended the day at 119.
Columbus’ Grant Watson had the best score outside of the qualifying teams. Watson shot 87, which placed him fifth overall on the day.
Watson’s top teammate was Ryan Coil, who ended the day at 106. Ethan Palmer shot 122, and Mason Heck shot 126.
