BURLINGTON — No. 11 (Class 1A) New London, WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union represented the Union area well on Saturday night as the trio of volleyball teams competed in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference finals at Loren Walker Arena on the campus of Southeast Community College.
It wasn’t the finish either of the teams would have liked, as the Tigers finished fourth and both WACO and Winfield were topped in the quarterfinals.
No. 5 (Class 1A) ranked Notre Dame took the championship title with a 25-22, 21-25, 15-12 victory over No. 8 (Class 2A) West Burlington.
The Tigers defeated the Wolves in the two’s opening quarterfinals match, but not after WMU came out with a statement win.
Winfield-Mt. Union took the first set 25-14, but fell in two straight to New London, 25-18 and 15-4.
New London then took on the eventual tournament winners, Notre Dame, in the semifinals. The Tigers took the first set, 26-24, but dropped two straight 23-25 and 7-15.
The loss set the Tigers up for a matchup with Holy Trinity, who won its quarterfinal match against WACO, but was downed by West Burlington, 25-13 and 25-12 in the semifinals.
New London was bested in straight sets against Holy Trinity, 25-19 in each of the two, slotting the Tigers a fourth-place finish.
Despite the loss to Holy Trinity in the quarterfinal round, WACO showed they can hang with the best, opening with a set one victory over the Crusaders.
The Warriors fought hard, but Holy Trinity prevailed with back-to-back set victories, 25-19 and 15-9.
The road to final rounds at SCC was tough one for the three area qualifiers, a handful of other area teams gave them all they had.
In the pool play round, which was played at four different locations, New London swept the competition at Harmony High School.
New London defeated Hillcrest Academy in two sets, 21-7 and 21-3. The Tigers then defeated Van Buren in a pair of sets, 21-9 and 21-12. New London followed with a win over WACO, 21-19, 18-21 and 15-10 to complete the sweep.
Van Buren was defeated by WACO, 21-8 and 21-7 in their opening match. WACO then topped Hillcrest Academy 2-0, 21-9 and 21-8.
Over at Winfield-Mt. Union, Holy Trinity finished with an 3-0 record, but Winfield followed close behind at 2-1.
The Wolves downed Pekin 21-17, 21-11 and followed up with a 21-6, 21-12 victory over Highland before the 21-16, 14-21, 8-15 loss to the Crusaders.
Highland went 1-2 on the day, falling to Holy Trinity, 21-9 and 21-6. Despite the loss to WMU, the Huskies did get a win on the day, downing Pekin 21-17 and 21-11.
Pekin didn’t pick up a win, but played well. Along with their losses to Winfield and Highland, the Panthers were downed by Holy Trinity 21-14 and 21-8.
Columbus was the only other Union area team that competed. The Wildcats played at Notre Dame.
It was a tough day for Columbus, as the Wildcats were swept on the day falling to Wapello, 21-8, 21-18; Notre Dame, 21-11, 21-4 and Danville, 21-11, 21-11.
