MARION ? New faces, and plenty of them, were in store for Fairfield at the Marion girls track invitational Thursday evening as the Trojans met big field of 12 teams with a head full of steam.
Katie Hammes won the discus for Fairfield?s only event victory of the night, but the Trojan?s peppered in plenty of mid-range finishes to take third place (77) behind Benton Community (133) and host Marion (81). Fairfield placed in the top eight in all events aside from two ? a stat that shows depth and versatility. Hammes followed up her winning discus throw of 115-feet, nine-inches with a second-place result in the shot put with a throw of 38-feet, six-inches ? both marks are personal records. Meloney Brown also set a PR of 34? 9.5? in the shot put finishing seventh.
?I thought our girls really competed tonight, We don?t see these teams during the year so it was difficult to judge what the other teams were going to do,? said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse. ?All the events were competitive, and, obviously, our throwers both had a big day.?
Fairfield also had superb finishes in both the shortest event on the track, and the longest as Libbey Schubert ran second in the 100-meter dash (13.01) and Amanda Melcher was runner-up in the 3000-meter run (12:01.43). Amanda Lamb put in a solid body of work taking third in the 400 (1:03.93) and fifth in the 200 (27.76) as well as running with Schubert, Mackenzie Laux and Brittney Fry in the fourth-place 4x400-relay (4:21.36). Fry (3rd, 2:32.57) and Laux (5th, 2:33.99) double-placed for the Trojans in the 800.
?Our middle and long-distance runners also made more of a contribution ? especially with Fry and Laux in the 800,? Hunerdosse said.
