Tough night for area in regional tournament
Small school volleyball teams knocked out of postseason

A quartet of area volleyball teams entered the Class 1A and 2A quarterfinals on Wednesday night. None of them moved on.
Central City 3, WACO 0
After sweeping Iowa Valley in the opening round of Class 1A Region 7, WACO found itself on the bad end of a 3-0 loss.
Central City controlled each of the three sets. The Warriors fell 25-16, 25-8 and 25-12.
WACO ended its season 18-13.
No. 5 (1A) North Tama 3, Keota 0
Much like WACO, Keota faltered in Class 1A Region 7. The Eagles were swept by North Tama to end their 2023 season.
Cassandra Swantz and Olivia Lyle each had two kills for Keota. Emily Sheetz had a pair of assists.
Defensively, Kimberly Clarahan put up 14 digs to pace the Eagles. Izzi Chalupa finished with 10.
No. 13 (2A) West Burlington 3, Cardinal 0
In a battle of former conference rivalry, West Burlington knocked out Cardinal in Class 2A Region 8.
In this showdown, it was West Burlington that got the best of the Comets. The Falcons won 25-10, 25-4, 25-5.
Skyllar Welcher and Emarie Finch coled Cardinal with two kills apiece. Emma Becker tallied 20 digs, and Brinlee Ostrander finished with 16 digs.
Wilton 3, Van Buren County 0
The Warriors battled in every set, but Wilton escaped in every one of them to beat Van Buren County in three sets.
Wilton knocked off Van Buren County 25-18, 25-20, 25-21, to move on to the Class 2A Region 8 semifinals.
Van Buren County finished the season 15-21.
