MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant softball team had a tough time trying to hold off 11th-ranked (4A) Burlington on Monday night. The co-Southeast Conference leaders took a pair of games from the Panthers at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.
Burlington erased an early deficit to win Game 1, 10-2. The Grayhounds rolled on, 18-1 in Game 2.
The Panthers did put together a challenge early. Starting pitcher Myah Starr kept the Grayhounds at bay in the first inning, and Mt. Pleasant plated two in the bottom of the first when Addison Clark knocked in both Emma Starr and Keagyn Coleman.
Unfortunately for Mt. Pleasant, Burlington would storm back with two in the second, three in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Clark and Emma Starr both finished the game with two hits to lead the Panthers.
Burlington scored 18 runs in two innings in Game 2. Mt. Pleasant finally got on the board in the third with a run by Emma Starr, who went 2-for-2 with the Panthers’ only two hits of the ballgame.
Mt. Pleasant is now 2-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The Panthers will play at Burlington (12-1, 8-0) on Thursday night.
