Tuesday night just wasn’t the right night for Southeast Iowa Union teams in the Class 1A and 2A baseball tournaments. Among the casualties from both classes were Mid-Prairie, Keota, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus and Cardinal.
Mediapolis 2, Mid-Prairie 1
The Golden Hawks suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Mediapolis at the Class 2A Substate 5 quarterfinals.
The game was tight throughout, as it went into the sixth inning tied. Mediapolis scored one each in the sixth and seventh to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Golden Hawks struggled all night against Mediapolis junior Lance Ludens, who gave up just one hit in the game. Mid-Prairie scored one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but that’s all they would get.
Mid-Prairie ended the season 19-10.
Anamosa 14, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 1
After Mid-Prairie’s loss, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus was the Union area’s only remaining shot in Class 2A Substate 5, but the favored Anamosa Blue Raiders were too much.
Anamosa scored the first nine runs of the game before WMU/Columbus plated one in the top of the third. The Blue Raiders put up four more in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth.
WMU/Columbus finished the year at 9-12.
Interstate 35 8, Cardinal 1
Cardinal’s offense couldn’t score until the seventh inning when Brody Phillips knocked in Craig Miller for the Comets’ only run of the game.
Kazin Miller was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs (three earned) over 3.1 innings of work. Matthew Blomme gave up two earned runs over 2.2 frames.
The Comets ended the year 14-12.
Moravia 5, Keota 0
The Eagles couldn’t get much offense going against Moravia in a Class 1A Substate 6 matchup.
The Mohawks were just up 1-0 after three innings, but added four in the fourth to run away with the game. Keota’s offense only mustered two hits on the night.
The Eagles closed out their 2024 campaign at 10-11.
