Thursday?s Demon Relays have been called off due to a poor weather forecast.
The meet, which was supposed to feature 26 boys? track teams running at Case Field, is not expected to have a make-up date.
?The Washington Relays is an outstanding meet, but I can?t run it and get somebody hurt,? Washington boys? track and field head coach Steve Roth said. ?It?s still about the kids, and if it?s 47 degrees, with 25 mph gusts, in a five-hour meet, if they don?t get hurt, they?ll get sick. A lot of teams don?t have much depth, so if you lose a person or two, it?s hard to come back.?
There is no official state protocol for what causes a meet to be canceled.
Area teams scheduled to compete in the Demon Relays were Mid-Prairie, WACO, Columbus and Keota.
According to Roth, this is one of the few times this meet has been canceled in his time at Washington.
?This is my 39th year and I think we?ve missed three of them,? Roth said. ?The three have been in the last six years, I think, because the weather in the spring is just (unpredictable). Two years ago it was 32 degrees at 4 in the afternoon.?
The Demon boys will be traveling to West Burlington on Monday for its next meet.
The girls' track meet scheduled for Friday at Columbus High School has also been canceled.
