FAIRFIELD — A two-day stretch of baseball in Fairfield ended in two very different ways on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Trojans, coming off a split in Fort Madison on Tuesday, struggled against non-conference opponent Chariton on Wednesday night, falling 8-0. Just 24 hours later, Fairfield was celebrating a walk-off win on the same field, 5-4 over Southeast Conference foe Fort Madison.
Caden Allison knocked in teammate Cason Miller for not only the game-winning run, but the series-winning run on Thursday during the seventh inning of the third Trojan-Bloodhound battle of the week.
On Wednesday, in a frustrating 8-0 loss to Chariton, which saw the Trojans collect just hit all night long. A Luke Konczal double was the only knock of the ballgame.
“It was frustrating that we squared up some balls and just didn't get the results we wanted, but we got process on some of those swings, so we were pleased with that,” said Fairfield coach Josh Allison after the game. “In the law of averages, the baseball gods will start smiling at you again.”
The next night, they really did so in the seventh inning. Coming into the Trojans’ last at-bat, the game was tied 4-4 with the top of the lineup due to bat. The first three reached, including Miller, who led off with a double before coming around to score on Allison’s fielder’s choice.
The Trojans had blown what was at one point a 3-0 lead. Fort Madison cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-run fourth, and after Fairfield tacked one on in the fifth, but the Bloodhounds tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run sixth.
Miller finished the night 3-for-4, and scored three of the Trojans’ five runs. Konczal went 0-for-3, but drove in two runs. Allison finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Nate Konczal sarated the game and gave up just two earned runs on five hits and four walks over four innings. Miller got the win on the mound after giving up one hit and talking one through one inning.
Fairfield moved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC with the win.
