The Fairfield baseball team was finally able to start their regular/Southeast Conference schedules Friday at Washington after scrimmaging against Pekin and Van Buren in the preseason and then having their first eight regular season contests against Ottumwa, Davis County, Van Buren, Burlington, Williamsburg and Chariton either postponed or flat-out cancelled during the first week of 2019 season.
Game one
Senior Jackson Weaton took the loss after throwing 88 pitches over four innings while allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Classmate Brittan Bowman tossed 34 pitches during his two innings of relief that included three runs allowed, all earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Cooper Drish, Caden Jones, Kosta Papazoglou, Austin Simpson and Jackson Weaton all collected one single each while Drish also earned a base-on-balls.
The Demons scored one run in the first, fourth and fifth innings before doubling up with three more scores in the home-half of the sixth.
Game two
FHS jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the top of the first and three more in the road frame of the second. Washington then answered with two scores of their own in the third before the Trojans added an insurance run in the sixth to let the ink dry on the 5-2 final.
Cole Engle, Jones, Papazoglou and Simpson each had one base hit in the nightcap while junior Carter Ferrel went 2-3 with a walk drawn, a stolen base and two runs scored. Weaton, Simpson and Engle scored the other three times with Simpson roping a homer for his tally.
Jones took the mound and earned the win after going 87 pitches over six innings with three runs, two earned, off of six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Papazogolou pitched the seventh and collected the save after 15 pitches that included one hit and a strikeout.
