BURLINGTON — Defending Southeast Conference champion Burlington is in a world of hurt in the SEC standings, thanks to a three-game clinic from the Fairfield Trojans.
The Trojans, after knocking off Burlington at home twice last week, made a huge dent in the championship race by finishing off the series sweep with a 7-5 road win.
Fairfield built a big lead early on, scoring two in the first and five in the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 advantage. Burlington came climbing back with two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, but the Trojans hung on for the win.
Nate Konczal kept the Grayhounds at bay until his last couple of innings, giving up five earned runs over 6.1 innings of work. Aiden Westercamp came in to get the final two outs in the seventh, but did create some trouble for himself by walking two batters and hitting one.
Caden Allison was 2-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate. Cason Miller went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Dain Burkhart, Tallon Bates and Westercamp all knocked in runs.
Fairfield did fall on Friday, getting walked off by Central Lee by the score of 5-4.
Bates went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Friday night’s loss. Burkhart knocked in a team-high two runs. Archer Kreuter started on the mound, giving up four earned runs over four innings, and Aidan Kreuter gave up one run over three in relief.
Heading into Monday night’s conference games, the Trojans carry an 11-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the SEC.
