BURLINGTON — Burlington High School hasn't been a kind place to play for visiting Southeast Conference teams this winter, and that trend continued on Friday night.
The Grayhounds knocked off visiting Fairfield in both games of an SEC girl-boy doubleheader, beating the Trojan girls 58-42, and the boys 57-54.
The Fairfield girls were fresh off their first SEC victory, and the Trojans put a scare into the first-place Grayhounds early on. Fairfield was down just 27-24 at halftime, and the Trojans were within 10, at 40-30, after the third horn, before Burlington closed the door in the fourth.
Grace Lyon led Fairfield with 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the loss. Faith Jones scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Emma Metcalf scored nine points. Maddy Martin, Natalie Steele and Elyse Setterstrom each had two.
The Trojan boys nearly came back from a 44-36 deficit with eight minutes to go. Fairfield outscored Burlington 18-13 in the final period, and hit a couple of big outside shots late to make the Grayhounds sweat, but Burlington got away with a close victory.
Despite the loss, Eli Zillman continued to impress, leading the team with 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Riley Perkins put up 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Voss Richardson scored eight points. Luke Konczal had six. Ethan Bisgard put up four points and four steals, and Spencer McCready scored two points.
The Fairfield girls are now 1-19 overall and 1-8 in conference play. The Trojan boys are 5-13 and 3-5.
