MOUNT PLEASANT ? Fairfield senior Stian Hoff was named co-bowler of the year and led the Fairfield boys? bowling team to its first state tournament bid Thursday in Mount Pleasant.
The Trojan boys extended their season at the district meet with a score of 3009 to become an at-large state qualifier. Fairfield finished second in the final team standings, while Louisa-Muscatine won the team race with 3101.
?The boys came ready to take on the competition,? said Fairfield head coach Lisa Greenig. ?They knew this was going to be a tough district and everyone on the team was going to have to contribute.?
And contribute they did.
Stian Hoff, who added to his season with an individual qualifier bid, started his second game with eight strikes in a row. His ninth ball was a perfect shot that left a 10 pin. He converted the spare and finished with a 269 to add to his first game score of 208. Hoff?s 477 was the second highest series of the day.
Fairfield?s Mitch Goudy finished fourth among all bowlers with a series of 416 and Ben Hull was right behidn with 413. Andrew Chatfield (379) and Gabe Hull (362) also scored on the state-qualifying squad.
The Trojans? 1236 in round one was a personal best and it was the first time the boys had three 200 games during Baker format. Their final series score of 3009 also was a team-high.
In the girls? competition, Fairfield finished third out of six with a score of 2368. Keokuk was the runaway winner with a score of 2743 and Mount Pleasant was second at 2684.
?Going in we were realistic and knew we probably wouldn?t win the match,? said Greenig. ?However, we set our sights on having fun and reaching for our personal bests.?
Baker, a senior, finished fifth individually with a personal-best 373 series. Although it looked to be the last meet of her high school career, Baker landed on the girls? individual qualifying list for the state tournament following a revision. Baker also was named to the girls? all-district squad.
Teammate and fellow Trojan senior Kaylen Marlay made her last match a memorable one by placing 12th overall with a 330 series. Also scoring for Fairfield were Nicci Mellott (312), Alyssa Chatfield (288) and Megan Harris (278).
?Our kids really stepped it up today,? added Greenig. ?They all did really well. I?m so proud of their accomplishment of making it to state this year.?
Bryan Marlay was named co-coach of the year on the boys? side.
The Iowa state tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday.
