The future for Fairfield boys' basketball looks bright after the Trojans eighth-grade team finished their 10-game season undefeated with a 49-37 victory over visiting Mt. Pleasant Tuesday night at the middle school.
'It was a little closer than we wanted it to be, but these guys fought through and we still won,” explained second-year skipper Willie Ghent who also coaches with the baseball team. 'We kept working the ball inside and getting good shots and I've been telling the guys all year that it starts with our defense and I think that's exactly how this game went. As we picked it up on defense, they started getting easier baskets.”
Willie on the teams' progression
'These guys have made my job pretty easy actually, they are a great group and they came out right from the beginning and were hot, beating Mt. P and Washinton back-to-back and those we two of our tougher games. The kids really impressed me. In practice, we mainly just focus on working hard and staying humble and we really just wanted an undefeated season and we accomplished that going 10-0.”
Ghent on the focus at the middle school level
'It depends on the group and these guys are really advanced for their grade. We really try to get them ready for high school, so I work with Mick [Flattery] especially early in the season and we use a lot of the same terminology that they use at the high school level.”
The eighth-grade boys' basketball team celebrates the final buzzer during their 12-point victory over Mt. Pleasant that sealed their undefeated season at 10-0.
