CHARITON ? The latest golf poll has the Fairfield boys ranked fifth in the state, and the team celebrated Saturday adding six more wins to its team record.
The Trojans placed second out of eight teams at the always difficult Chariton Invite, finishing four strokes back of Creston with a score of 310. Pella came in third with a 312 team score.
?Great tournament for us heading into postseason play,? said Fairfield coach Mick Flattery. ?Creston was a state qualifier last season and have four guys back. We played really well having four guys in the 70s and high score being 81.?
Leading the Trojans was Davis Lowenberg, who shot a 4-over-par 76 to tie for third individually. The Trojan senior played went 3-under-par on the par-5 holes and drained a nearly 45-foot putt for Fairfield?s lone eagle Saturday. Lowenberg also recorded one birdie.
Sophomore Alex Shier carded a 77 to once again check in with the second lowest score for the Trojans. Individually, Shier tied for sixth and played the par-5s at 1-under-par.
Matt Carr, a sophomore, fired a 78, and senior Cody Kool had a 79 to round out the runner-up team score.
Fairfield?s CJ Shipman and Landon Gamrath shot a pair of 81s as alternates. Both golfers played the par-3 holes at 1-over-par.
Overall, the Trojans (36-4) finished with five birdies.
?The guys appear to be ready for a busy week of postseason play,? Flattery added. ?We played the par-5 [holes] at even-par today as a team, which is really good.?
The postseason begins with the Southeast Conference tournament Tuesday at Keokuk. The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m.
