Trojan boys tennis nearly spoils Keokuk’s SEC title

FAIRFIELD — Just a few days after bumping Fort Madison off the top line of the Southeast Conference boys tennis standings, the Fairfield boys tennis team nearly did it again on Monday against Keokuk.
The Trojans welcomed the Chiefs for the final SEC match of the year, one Keokuk had to win to wrap up the conference title. The Chiefs narrowly escaped with a 5-4 victory.
Fairfield won three of the six singles matches. Jeremy Goodale had the top singles win for the Trojans, taking the No. 2 match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Jace Hannes won the No. 5 singles match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Tristan Paton rolled in the No. 6 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Blake Holden fell 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Brecken Courtright dropped the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-0, and Garrett Flanagan took the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-2.
Fairfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Holden and Goodale pulled out the top match 6-2, 6-4. Hannes and Flanagan fell 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 2 match, and Courtright and Paton lost a heartbreaking No. 3 match, falling 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 11-9.
