FAIRFIELD — Both Fairfield basketball teams took on Centerville on Monday night at home, but there were quite different results between the two games.
The Fairfield boys pulled off a thrilling one-point victory, beating Centerville 70-68. The girls lost in the varsity opener, dropping their game 60-35.
The Trojan boys’ win was highlighted by yet another big night for senior Riley Perkins. Perkins scored 20 points in the win just three days after a 17-point night against Burlington.
The Trojan boys were leading the game 19-17 after one quarter, 36-34 at halftime and 51-50 after three periods.
Fairfield led the game 69-61 with just 1:40 showing on the clock after Eli Zihlman threw down a thunderous two-handed dunk, but a technical foul followed, and that sparked a quick 7-0 Big Red run.
Centerville had a couple of shots to tie or win the game in the final 10 seconds, but none of those opportunities came to fruition. The final one of those chances was broken up by Andrew Myers at the buzzer.
The Fairfield girls weren’t quite as fortunate. The Trojans were down 15-6 after one, 32-16 at halftime, and 47-25 after three quarters.
Natalie Steele and Grace Lyon each scored seven points for the Fairfield girls. Emma Metcalf had six points. Elyse Setterstrom and Haylee Eklund scored four each. Faith Jones scored three, and both Maddy Martin and Lenora Felt finished with two.
The Fairfield boys are now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Trojan girls are 0-10 and 0-4. Both teams host Mt. Pleasant on Friday night.
