DES MOINES — No matter what athletic event is taking place at Fairfield High School, there is likely state champion quality talent somewhere in the Trojans’ home gym, at least if the dance team has a scheduled performance.
The Trojans, led by coach Heidi Bowman, scored a big win at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Competition in Des Moines earlier this month, doing something that a Fairfield squad hadn’t done since the 1990s.
The Trojan dance team took first place in the Class IX Pom Division. It was the first state championship for Fairfield dance since 1997.
Fairfield also finished fifth place in the Class II Lyrical Division.
The Trojans had two soloists compete at the meet. Chayse Gilchrist and Libby Ferrel both took their shot at the solo division, and Gilchrist wound up with a fifth place trophy.
The Fairfield dance team doesn’t have anymore big competitions coming up this winter, but with plenty of home events left for Trojan athletics, there still is time to come out and see the squad.
