The Fairfield girls' soccer team almost pulled off a tough SEC road win to improve to 2-0 in the young conference season, however, Mt. Pleasant held on for the 2-1 victory after edging the Trojans 3-1 in penalty kicks.
'I was proud of how well they stayed strong and held it together under pressure,” said skipper Brittany Winslow. 'We only have one returning defender from last year, but they are starting to play together like they've been doing it for years.”
After falling behind 1-0 on a Panther goal from Lizzie Litchfield to Mary West, Fairfield avoided a second Mt. P goal in the 27th minute when West hit the crossbar and Clare Else was able to equalize with 17:48 remaining in first half on a quick strike.
In the second half, Mt. Pleasant had the vast majority of the shots, but both teams had good chances to win it before PKs came into play.
The Trojans Emily McAvan had a breakaway with four minutes left in the second half, but the Panther keeper made a sliding save and in the second overtime, Mary West had a one-on-one, but Fairfield's keeper Westphal made a sliding save, as well.
