FAIRFIELD — Despite a big day from its top players, the Fairfield girls tennis team dropped two tough ones in a home triangular on Tuesday. The Trojans fell 5-4 in a Southeast Conference clash against Fort Madison, and dropped a nonconference match 6-3 to Davis County.
Against Fort Madison, the Trojans swept the Top-2 singles matches and Top-2 doubles matches, but couldn’t scoop up any of the lower showdowns.
Tess Paton downed her opponent 8-1 in her first singles match of the day. Sydney Wells swept the No. 2 match 8-0, but Fort Madison took the other four singles games.
Maddy Greiner was defeated 8-5 in the No. 3 match. Giteeka Adhikari dropped the No. 4 match 8-3. Emma Wendland fell 8-1 in the No. 5 match, and Emily Simpson dropped a nail-biter, 9-7, in the No. 6 game.
The Trojans needed three doubles wins to take the match. Paton and Greiner won the No. 1 match 8-2, and Wells and Wendland took the No. 2 match 8-1, but Fairfield couldn’t get the last point, as Simpson and Aspen Heckethorn fell 8-2 in the No. 3 match.
Fairfield had another good showing out of its top players in the game against Davis County. Paton rolled again in the No. 1 match, winning 8-1. Wells won 8-5 in the No. 2 match.
Davis County won the last four singles matches to take a two-point advantage into doubles. Greiner lost her No. 3 match 8-1. Wendland fell 9-7 in the No. 4 game. Simpson dropped the No. 5 match 8-0, and Heckethorn fell 8-3 in the No. 6 match.
In doubles, Paton teamed up with Wells to take down an 8-3 win in the No. 1 match. Greiner and Wendland fell 8-3 in the No. 2 match, and Simpson and Heckethorn dropped the No. 6 match 8-0.
Fairfield is now 1-3 on the season. The Trojans will play at Keokuk on Thursday.
