BURLINGTON — The Fairfield girls tennis team picked up just one match in a Southeast Conference showdown with Burlington on Thursday at Fairfield Middle School.
The Grayhounds stayed undefeated in SEC play with an 8-1 win over the Trojans. It was Burlington’s third-straight win over Fairfield in the all-time series, but also only the third since joining the SEC.
The Trojans’ lone win came from Giteeka Adhikari, who grinded out an 8-5 victory in the No. 4 singles match.
Sydney Wells lost the No. 1 singles contest 8-2. Madison Greiner fell by the same score in the No. 2 showdown.
Fairfield’s No. 3 player, Emma Wendland had one of the closest losses on the day, falling 8-3. Una Carter was defeated 8-1 in the No. 5 singles match, and Lola Hatchette fell 8-3 in the No. 6 game.
The No. 1 Trojan doubles team of Wells and Greiner nearly pulled off a win, but came up just short, dropping the match 8-6. Wendland and Adhikari lost 8-3 in the No. 2 match. Carter and Hatchette fell 8-1 in the No. 3 match.
It was Fairfield’s first conference loss. The Trojans defeated Fort Madison on March 30.
Fairfield is in Mt. Pleasant for a matchup on Monday. That game will be in Wednesday’s edition of The Union.
